The Republicans run Michigan so they decided they can take your money and hold their presidential primary election, thinking you won’t notice since the Republican Secretary of State has turned their partisan affair into a state-funded election at a cost of ten million Michigan tax dollars. Nice, eh?
For Democrats who haven’t read about it in the real press, we want Democrats wishing to exercise their party right to help decide the 2012 Democratic Party nominee for President of the United States to skip this Republican primary. Why? Because voting for Barack Obama (whom the SOS put on the ballot, maybe to make the Republican party primary event seem fair and balanced) will not count!
You read that correctly. Michigan Democratic Party members wishing to have their vote count will cast their vote for party nominee for President on May 5, 2012 at their local county caucus locations. Yes, CAUCUS. Here in Houghton County, the caucus site will be at the Super 8 in Houghton, Michigan. Those wishing to support President Obama should plan to join us at the caucus Saturday morning, May 5, 2012.
Democratic Party caucus participants will register, attest to be a Democrat who states they have not participated in any other vote for 2012 Presidential candidate (e.g., the February Republican primary), and they will be admitted to the caucus activities. The caucus plan is to be brief and to the point and we will submit the results to the state party, who will bring the results to the national convention in September.
Confused yet? Blame it on the Republicans. While you are at it, tell them you do not approve of them taking ten million dollars in your taxes to hold their political party event.
P.S. Cleverly, the February 28 election may also include local elections in your area. If this is the case, the Michigan Democratic Party is urging Democrats to vote on those candidates or issues, but do not vote on February 28 for President. Come to our caucus on May 5 to do that. Today I counted 249 new Republican laws this year signed by Gov. Snyder. I have not had time to read each new law. Have you?
If you have not read the new laws, Public Act 38 signed into law earlier this year might be a good place to start because it means your taxes are probably going up in 2012 – unless, of course, you are a corporation.
Grab something comforting while you just look at the analysis from Michigan’s very own Senate Fiscal Agency that describes a new Republican re-distribution law that gives business money taken from the people:
LANSING — Continuing the effort to help put more money into the pockets of the middle class, the Obama-Biden campaign has released a new online calculator that computes what an extension and expansion of the payroll tax cut would mean for American families.
“Last year President Obama lowered the payroll tax so middle class families could keep more of what they earn. And now as the President continues his fight for the middle class, Republicans have blocked the extension in order to protect millionaires and billionaires from having to chip in a little bit more,” Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer said. “The President understands we need to continue to growing our economy and restoring security for the middle class, giving Michigan families more money to put food on the table, buy books for college, or pay their mortgage.”
Under President Obama’s plan, the typical middle class family would save $1,500 a year in taxes. The plan also provides incentives for nearly six million small businesses to grow and hire new workers.
This is in stark contrast to a plan from Mitt Romney, which overwhelmingly favors the wealthiest Americans. Almost half of the money he’d put back into Americans’ pockets each year would go to the wealthiest 1%.
“Mitt Romney has had plenty of trouble standing for what he believes in but he has been consistent on one important issue, his commitment to helping the rich and leaving the middle class on their own,” Brewer said. “Mitt Romney, who said ‘let Detroit go bankrupt,’ is now willing to deny hard working Michigan families a $1,500 tax cut, calling it a ‘little band-aid.’ He’s not only out of touch with the middle class but he’s out of touch with the people of Michigan.”
“This is a time when we need strong leaders with a clear plan for how to put Americans back to work, restore middle-class security and create a fairer economy where hard work pays off,” Brewer continued. “Mitt Romney and the Republicans running for President simply have nothing to offer – especially not here in Michigan.”

In the “just in case you have not seen the news” file, we repeat here some of the highlights of the discussion on licensing bullies in Michigan. The legislation was originally intended to make bullying more difficult, but once the current lot of unsupervised Republicans controlling every part of Michigan state government got their appendages on it, they managed to transform an anti-bullying bill into a bully license for Michigan kids.
The bad bill was met with a stern rebuke by the Democratic leader in the Senate and quickly got the nation’s attention, including Stephen Colbert who addressed it on Tonight’s Word.
A leader using a bully pulpit was able to stop the full force of the GOP controlled Michigan government. It started with a strong voice, as you can see in the video below, in which Minority Leader in the Michigan Senate Gretchen Whitmer takes Republican senators to task over the bad legislation.
Today, the Detroit Free Press reports that the Michigan State House voted for a revision of the bill that stripped the horrible provision that would let students bully if they claimed it was for religious or moral purposes (otherwise known as the “bully license”).
The bully pulpit works.

LANSING – Voters across Michigan sent Republicans a loud and clear message last night. Democratic values and Democratic candidates prevailed throughout the state from Traverse City to Battle Creek, Royal Oak to Flint, Lansing to Kalamazoo, Muskegon to Jackson, Ferndale to Southfield it was clear Democratic policies won out.
“Last night was a great night for Democrats,” Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer said. “Voters approved millages for public safety in numerous municipalities, said discrimination won’t be tolerated in Traverse City, and re-elected Flint Mayor Dayne Walling.”
“Voters had a clear choice between the over-reaching, extreme policies of the Republicans and the policies of Democrats which focused on putting people back to work and standing up for middle class families,” added Brewer. “The results speak for themselves. The people of Michigan believe in Democratic values and candidates. They want a strong middle class and they want elected officials who will fight for them and fight to bring jobs to Michigan.”
“We will capture this momentum as we move toward 2012,” said Brewer. “We now turn our attention to re-electing President Obama, Sen. Debbie Stabenow, taking back the State House and State Supreme Court, and adding to the Democratic Congressional Delegation.”

LANSING – Republican 2012 candidates Mitt Romney and Rick Perry may be traveling to Michigan tomorrow to deliver speeches at a political conference, but neither candidate has a plan that will deliver what Michigan needs most: jobs.
On Friday afternoon, former Michigan Representative Bart Stupak and Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer responded to Romney and Perry’s economic agendas, highlighting how both would be bad for Michigan workers and families.
Both of these guys claim to be job creators, but their records speak for themselves. Mitt Romney’s private sector record was made up of corporate takeovers and layoffs. Rick Perry’s most recent action on jobs was laying-off tens of thousands of teachers in his own state,” said former Representative Bart Stupak. “When the auto industry was struggling, Mitt Romney wrote an op-ed titled ‘Let Detroit Go Bankrupt.’ Rick Perry was quick to jump on the bandwagon, and he’s still railing against the effort that saved the auto industry and created thousands of jobs.”
“For more than 70 years, Americans have known that a lifetime of work meant the guarantee of Social Security after they retired,” said MDP Chair Mark Brewer. “Rick Perry calls Social Security a Ponzi scheme and he argues that we should abolish it. Mitt Romney claims he’s fighting for future generations of seniors, but in reality he’d just turn your money over to the same Wall Street bankers who drove our economy to the brink. Imagine what would have happened if your retirement depended solely on the stock market over the past few years.”
Both Romney and Perry will address the Michigan Republican Party’s exclusive policy conference on Mackinac Island this Saturday.
